Over 100 professional women of color gathered at Manatee Lagoon in West Palm Beach for "Nourish"; an all-day brain health retreat. This free event, was designed to address the specific needs of the attendees including new techniques to reduce stress, increase positive health through food and drink, and health practices which increase energy, brain power and productivity.
The event was designed to introduce and/or remind others of the beauty in taking care of one’s mind, body and spirit.
Healthier Neighbors partnered with the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County to create the “Aspiring Entrepreneurs” series, dedicated to residents interested in starting a for-profit business. Each month we welcomed residents to learn about every aspect of of business development, including legal structuring, accounting, marketing and more.
Additionally, during the final workshop, Legal Aid sponsored a pitch contest for a chance for thirteen (13) participants to win $500 towards their business.
Healthier Neighbors partnered with Manifest Church in West Palm Beach, Fl for a series of programs to bridge the gap between the church and the community. Both Barbershop Talk and Salon Talk included real-world discussions that often don't happen inside of the four (4) walls of the church, alongside a healthy lunch. Barbershop also included free haircuts by some of the areas most popular barbers. While Salon Talk included breast cancer screening (in partnership with Sojourners with Healing Hearts Breast Cancer Survivors), as well as blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring.
Our on-going series of Community Conversations welcomes residents, educators, community and faith leaders, business professionals, community investors, and elected officials to tackle sensitive issues in a safe place... over a good meal.
Taking place In various locations throughout our service area, these discussions have fostered ideas in the areas of behavioral health, mental health, public health, access to healthy foods, fair policing, trauma and violence, affordable housing, and so much more.
In an effort to provide healthy foods, services, and resources to Riviera Beach and Northern West Palm Beach, Healthier Neighbors created a series of Pop-up Produce Pantries.
Serving 208 families and over 700 residents with almost 10,000 lbs of fresh fruits and vegetables; as well as recipe cards, shopping tote bags, and access to health screenings.
Healthier Neighbors hosted several comprehensive workshops, specifically engaging the faith-based community and its leadership throughout Palm Beach County, . The workshops covered a variety of topics and conversations. including how Healthier Neighbors could support them to bridge the gap between the community and the church.
In conjunction with a host of partnering organizations, including United Way, American Heart Association, and Trindy Gourmet, Healthier Neighbors is committed to addressing healthy and affordable food in local “food deserts.”
With that in mind, we introduced the idea of the "healthy corner store"; housed inside of an existing neighborhood store. The partnership led to two (2) pop-up events, which included healthy cooking demonstrations and free tastings to showcase how delicious and easy eating healthy foods can be incorporated into everyday meals and snacks.
A nationally renowned course that equips participants with the skills to assist someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Palm Health Foundation’s efforts to expand MHFA in diverse communities with residents as trainers resulted in a four-year $238K grant from the Florida Blue Foundation in November 2018. The funding provides free MHFA trainings for 2,000 African American, Haitian and Hispanic adults residing in the foundation’s Healthier Together communities. MHFA is delivered in partnership with Alpert Jewish Family & Children’s Services.
The Healthier Neighbors community now has many certified MHFA trainers, including the staff of The Reentry Center in Riviera Beach.
Healthier Neighbors partnered with the City of West Palm Beach-Mayor’s Village Initiative to produce the first Community Healing Event. The planning team was strategic in combining two events in one: the day opened with a libation ceremony led by local resident and known drummer, Abasi Hanif of Livin the Rhythm. In partnership with Ms. Angela Williams of Mothers Against Murderers Association, we invited mothers and family members who lost their loved-one to gun violence to a day of healing. The morning session was exclusive to grieving families. At noon the event was opened to the entire community.
